Missing husband and children? Found, COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 15:43 GMT (UK) »
On the 1881 census  there are four children born to Robert Brown and wife Isabella.
RG11  Piece 266  Folio74   page 43
They are:

Alfred R Brown 1877 Islington
Annie Brown 1878 Islington
Ada brown 1879 Islington
Flora Brown 1800 Islington

In the 1891 census.
RG12  Piece  76   Folio  9   Page  12
The only ones I can find are:
Isabella Widow age 38 Charwoman with two children
Annie born 18779 and James born 1882.
They are living at 30 Rutland Street St George Hanover Square.
But, they are all born Pimlico.

I cannot find three of the first four children or their father.  He could have died.  I am looking now between the last birth 1882 and 1890

Then on the 1901 census
RG13 Piece 202 Folio 140 Page 50

Isabella is a widow with all her children:
Alfred R 24  Islington
Annie 23 Tottenham? should be Islington!
Ada 22 Tottenham?   should be Islington!
Flora 21 Tottenham?  should be Islington!
Arthur 19 Islington
Ethel 0 or 11 Islington  Must be 11?
Frank 9 Islington  Could this be James from the 1881?

Family chat has it that some of the children went into a home, the work house...........

Any thoughts on where I can find these children I am particularly interested in Flora who I can follow down,
Thank you,
Abaim

When was Robert born? Could this be his death?

Deaths Mar 1891
Brown  Robert   age 30  St. Geo.H.Sq.  v1a p391

This would mean he died just before the 1891 census....

Hi,
I spent all of last evening on Thomas and Isabella!  I decided not to put it on my post because I thought it a coincidence and found Isabella as Brown in 1901.  I wonder would it be common then to revert to your earlier married name?  And there is Ethel (Esthel) aged 9months!  Named as a daughter of Thomas Elliott.  If Ethel is only 9months old then Thomas must have died 1990 or very early 1901.  I will look now.

I don't generally like coincidences but..........
Back in a minute,
Abiam

The THomas Elliot one does fit nicely in the middle.
I wonder if they just lived together but they had Ethel and then said they were married for the census....? If Ethel was Robert's, it seems strange there would be a 7 year gap between Horace and Ethel. I wonder if she then in 1901 after Thomas was off the scene remembered her legal name was actually Brown.....

Speculation I know.....!

On FreeBMD there is not a marriage for Isabella Brown and Thomas Elliot between 1881 and 1892!

I've been through the marriage index and I can't find a marriage for them.  And the daughter Ethel is down as Thomas Elliott's child.

If she did move in with Thomas where did Horace Brown come from?  There is a Horace Brown acting as witness at the marriage of Flora Brown in1909.   :(Modified :(  I have removed a death date as it does not fit. I cannot find a death for Thomas nor for Robert Brown.

What I really want to know is where the older children went on the 1891,
does anyone have any ideas, please,
Thanks for your help Claire,
Cheers,
Abiam

So, where would these children - Alfred R 5, Ada 3 and Flora 1 - have been sent between 1881 and 1891?  They all turn up together with their mother, widow, on the 1901 plus 3 more children!  I am not at all sure when Robert Brown, father, died.

Any suggestions, please?
Cheers,
Abiam
