Hi,Kerry,
Sorry to have been a bit vague. Frank Sayers was my partners father who died in 1971.Arthur was his father who died c.1957. I have found from living relatives birth records that  Arthur's wife maiden was Williams ( at last). I have also found a marriage for Arthur in 1910 which we are sure is right but there seems to be some confusion about her christian name. I couldn't find anything for Constance Williams either so I'm thinking now that it must be something different. My partner thinks she came from Kent originally but is not sure and seems to remember she had a sister 'Katie'
Thanks again,
Babs.

Okay - let's start in the recent past and work backwards then:

deaths of Frank Sayer(s), 1971:
d. Frank SAYER, MarQ 1971, Sheffield RD, 2d, 292, b. 20 Feb 1919
d. Frank SAYER, MarQ 1971, Bumlingeon RD [that's what it looks like], 6b, 2902, b. 7 Jun 1887
d. Frank Alfred SAYERS, JunQ 1971, Brighton RD, 5h, 142, b. 4 Apr 1917

I suspect we're looking at the one who died in Brighton then - and the only corresponding birth record for a Frank A. Sayers in 1917 is the one in Thanet mentioned in my previous post - with mother's maiden name Williams.  Given that there seems to be uncertainty about Frank's parents' names, probably worth investing in his birth certificate to confirm exactly what their names were.

deaths of Arthur (or Frank) Sayer(s) 1957:
d. Arthur G. SAYERS, MarQ 1957, Bromley RD, 5b, 214, aged 81 [1875/6]
d. Arthur SAYER, JunQ 1957, West Bromwich RD, 9b, 718, aged 70 [1886/7]
d. Frank SAYERS, JunQ 1957, Horsham RD, 5h, 535, aged 58 [1898/9]
d. Arthur A. SAYERS, SepQ 1957, Hackney RD, 5c, 593, aged 67 [1889/90]
d. Arthur H. SAYERS, SepQ 1957, Deben RD, 4b, 613, aged 57 [1899/1900]
d. Arthur E. SAYERS, DecQ 1957, Wandsworth RD, 5d, 956, aged 77 [1879/80]
d. Frank E. SAYERS, DecQ 1957, Cuckfield RD, 5h, 220, aged 68 [1888/9]

Frank E. Sayers in Cuckfield certainly matches the Tendring marriage.

Hi Richard,
Many thanks for your help.
Have been out today around the cemeterys and found Frank Edward Sayers buried with Constance Ada.The dates tie up too,so I think we've cracked that one.
I'm pretty sure now her maiden name was Williams but can't find any record of her in births or marriages.Any help on that score would be great,
Thanks again,
Babs.

Hello - if you've found Constance's grave, did it give her date of birth or death?  Then we could look at the death indices for clues.
Thanks
Richard.

Hi Richard,
The gravestone only gives 1969 as date of death. The family can't remember anything more than that.
Thanks,
Babs.

Here we go then:

d. Constance Ada SAYERS, DecQ 1969, Cuckfield RD, 5h, 639, b. 15 Mar 1892

No obvious matching birth record to accompany that for a Constance Ada Williams in England or Wales, nor seemingly in Scotland.  I can't get on to the Irish index at the moment, but it may be worth a try.

There are four births of a Constance Ada of any surname in the March quarters of 1892 (and none in the following June quarter):
b. Constance Ada LINDERUP, MarQ 1892, Sunderland RD, 10a, 623
b. Constance Ada ROBBINS, MarQ 1892, West Ham RD, 4a, 223
b. Constance Ada ROGERSON, MarQ 1892, Prestwich RD, 8d, 417
b. Constance Ada SMITH, MarQ 1892, Hambledon RD, 2a, 145

Being born in 1892, you'd expect her to appear in the 1901 census - trouble is there don't appear to be any instances of Constance Ada Williams, but there are lots of Constance Williams.

Sadly I think you'll probably need to fork out for a couple of certificates here to get much further - Frank Alfred Sayer's birth certificate from 1917 and Frank E. Sayers & Connie A. Williams' marriage certificate from 1916 might help answer a lot of your questions.

Where di you find the grave?    If it was in Cuckfield churchyard the museum may be able to help as many of the stewards there are of "mature" years and may remember the family.  Cuckfield registration district covers a much wider area though.

Hi Andrea,
Thanks for your help. We found Constance's grave in Highbrook cemetery with husband Frank. We went to Cuckfield museum but was closed! Will try again soon.
