Dryburgh/Ross
« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 16:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
I work for the Markinch Heritage Group and I received this email from someone visiting our site:

"Could you help me with information on a John Ross (Mason), who married an Elisabeth Dryburgh in Markinch on 12.12.1846. I do know that the family moved to Edinburgh and one son David appears to have been raised by his maternal grandparents Andrew Dryburgh and Isabella Dryburgh (née Raeburn) in Markinch. Would it be the practice for the child to forego his given name and adopt the forename of the grandfather? I ask this as i have found records of a son called Andrew who would be around the age of the child named David but I can not find any other reference to him."

Any help? My initial reaction is that this son, David/Andrew is illegitimate and has been brought up by his grandparents.

If anyone could look up some censuses for me, that'd be great.
