Help Dating Photo Please
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 15:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone can help me date a photograph.

If the photo is of who I think it is of, then the lady second from the left, showing her right profile was born c. 1884 (going off her marriage cert.).

Sticking to the theme of "if the photo is of who I think it is of", then the two little boys in the dark suits with white collars were born 1912 and 1915.

Any suggestions greatfully received.

Many thanks for reading, Best Wishes, Kirsty  :)

Hi Kirsty...my own opinion is that this is earlier, just before the war...the two women are wearing what look like the long jackets and skirts favoured from about 1905 or so up till the war...after the war colours and fabrics became lighter.

It's possible the women may have been wearing outdated clothing because of wartime economy, but they look like stylish and well-dressed women so if it were about 1925 as you suspect I'd think they'd be a little more up-to-the-minute. Just my opinion.

It would be helpful if we could see the whole photo, scanned in colour and including the outer edges. If there is any printing on the back it would be good to see a scan.

Cheers,

Hello Kirsty
What a wonderful array of expressions.
Agree with China and Scrimmers.
The lady's masculine style jacket became popular from 1900 although her hat would
date this later. The boys are wearing pretty much standard wear for the time having the
round hat from the previous decade replaced with these cloth caps and they seem to be
in breeches rather than knickerbockers.I would say around 1910.

Hi and thank you to Jim, scrimnet and China,

I think I've got to agree with you. The boys in the photo are unlikely to have been born in 1912 and 1915. Hmm, a bit of a puzzler.

I'm still thinking the woman showing her right profile is my woman but maybe none of the children are hers. It looks like we've got two families in the photo, what with the two women.

I'm afraid the above image is the only one I have as it was scanned and forwarded to me by a relative as you see it.

I do have another image with what I think is the same woman showing her right profile again. There's a bit of a story here... Apparently the lady in question, Edith Jackson nee Jones, lost her left eye in an accident and in all photo's appears only showing her right profile to conceal her lost left eye.

Here is another photo of Edith with two of her sons born c. 1912 & 1915. Do you think the dates tie-in better with this photo?

Many, many thanks, Kirsty  :)

Hi Kirsty,

I think that they could be the same person.  To me, there looks to be a resemblance between the two women in the first photo.  Could the one on the right with the small child be an elder sister of the one you think is Edith?

Hello Kirsty
The 2nd. photo ties in with the dates you have,1915-18 I would suggest.
The little boy is wearing a belted sailor suit popular from about 1915.
The woman is wearing standard daywear for this time but still
wearing ankle boots rather than shoes which were becoming the norm for women about this time.
