The only John BAINBRIDGE I can see in 1871 census born Knaresborough was born 1852 and living in Bradford with sisters Martha and Hannah, and parents Benjamin and Susannah SWALES

this was a second marriage for Susannah

Could this be your family? In 1861 census the husband was Joseph BAINBRIDGE

John's birth cert would give Elizabeth's maiden name to help get further back, a couple of possibles in 1851 census but nothing definite without more information
Several Swintons in Yorkshire for her birthplace, and a Swinton Hill in Berwickshire

Many thanks Barbara...looks as if the last post (4) is the family i'm looking for.
John immigrated to Queensland Australia and is my gg gfather; being under Bambridge is why i missed it, still new at this but learning fast. Bainbridge is still mispelt quite a bit once they lost my medical records because someone wrote Brainbridge!!...your post is greatly appreciated.

You really will need John's birth cert before going on, to enable you to find his parents' marriage, and there are a few possibilities for that.  William and Elizabeth's marriage cert would then hopefully give both fathers' names and occupations.

There are a couple of Williams in 1851 census, neither with exact birthdate, although both are close to it, both born Kirkby Stephen, and neither is with father, one is with mother, the other with siblings.

If you do get a couple of certificates, please do come back and post the details if you need any further help in tracing the families
