« on: Friday 27 February 09 01:00 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out some information regarding Jeremiah SEXTON he married Catherine SHEA don't kn when.  He was Catholic and b about 1814.  Eventually he came to Canada and settled in Flos Twp, Simcoe Co., Ontario.
I would appeciate any information anyone can find.  Some of the family think it may have been Cork, Ireland but no ne knows why they think Cork.

Thank you

There's a mention of a Cork Sexton here:
http://bbs.mayo-ireland.ie/WebX?8@4.qCYodaXXUdJ.0@.3b9dd30e

Lots of people sailed from the Cove of Cork (Cobh / Queenstown), which might explain why people have heard that their ancestors came from that county. They may or may not have originated there. I read in a couple of places that the Irish name 'Sexton' hails from Limerick.

'This interesting name has two possible origins, from an English occupational surname and from an Irish personal name. ... The second origin is from the Anglicized form of the Gaelic Irish "O'Seastnain", descendant of "Seastnan", a personal name of uncertain origin .... Today the name is mainly found in Limerick city.'

However, O'Sexton is mentioned in this book:
'Families of Co. Cork, Ireland'
By Michael C. O'Laughlin, Irish Genealogical Foundation (U.S.)
