Wallingford baptism William ROSE
« on: Friday 27 February 09 06:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Would someone be kind enough to look for the baptismal record of William Henry ROSE in Wallingford ( not sure which
church) c1833. His parents were Henry and Charlotte ROSE.

Thanks in advance,
Carmela

Hi Carmela,

Sorry - I've checked all 3 Wallingford parishes - St Leonards, St Peters & St Mary le More - and I can't find a baptism for William Henry Rose.

Have you seen the baptism on the IGI in nearby Checkendon 19 April 1835 for a Charlotte Sarah Rose d/o Henry & Charlotte?

Unfortunately, I don't have the PRs for Checkendon.

Hi Jill,
Thanks for looking. I thought Walingford was the most likely place as he always gave it as his birth place on census returns.

Yes, I did know about Charlotte's baptism in Checkendon, but according to census records she was born in South Stoke, as was the next child George (1838), but he sometimes gave Woodcote as his birth place.
The next 3 consistently give  Great Haseley as birth place.
The family had moved there before 1841.

Perhaps I should post on the Oxfordshire board and see if anyone has Checkendon, South Stoke and Woodcote.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Hi Sue,
Thanks for the George Rose baptism, one more that I did not have. It also settles the question of where they were living and why George gave Woodcote as his birth place.
Now really puzzled as where William was baptised.
Checkendon is still a possibility, I suppose. It's really annoying as William is my gt. grandfather.

According to the Oxfordshire FHS website, Checkendon PRs are available on fiche (not on CD) and Woodcote aren't yet transcribed.

I was going to suggest you try requesting a Baptism Search from them for the surname Rose but it doesn't look as though either parish has been added to their baptism search database yet.

It's possible that someone might have the Checkendon fiche and can check it for you, and sometimes the people from Oxon FHS come onto RC and might take pity on you!!  :-\

If you decide to ask for help with the Checkendon look up, I'd be inclined to start a new thread with Checkendon in the title  - just to make sure you attract everyone's attention!  ;D

Good luck,
Jill

Thanks Jill. The OFHS was going to be my next stop. I might try posting a query on the RootsWeb Oxford List, but don't really expect that anyone wants to search through a fiche.

Woodcote was a chapelry of South Stoke until 1846 and had no parish registers of its own prior to that date.  You will need to look in the South Stoke registers for earlier events.  Registers of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials for Woodcote commencing in 1846 are still at the church.

In view of Orpheus's information, I took a look at the 'title page' of the PRs for South Stoke (Oxon FHS CD). You might find this interesting:

"South Stoke.....until 1846 covered the 'uphill' villages of Woodcote and Exlade, which were then made a separate parish. An old Chapelry at Woodcote was used regularly 8 times a year but provision was made for the 'uphill' parishioners to use Checkendon in inclement weather , and vice versa for the 'downhill' residents of Checkendon to use South Stoke."

So, from that, - if the family lived in Woodcote in 1837 when George was baptised in South Stoke -  it seems likely that , as William's baptism isn't to be found in South Stoke, it is more than likely to be found in Checkendon.

I think we may have found him - just got to nail the blighter now!!  ;)
