Look Up Please - Death of Sarah Amelia TANNER
« on: Monday 02 March 09 15:54 GMT (UK) »
This is my first time on this site, so bear with me if I get it wrong.
I am looking for the death of Sarah Amelia TANNER formerly PREECE nee BARRETT.  Born Tillington 1863.  Her address was 60 School Street, Tirphil U.D. Sarah was alive in 1939, I have no idea of what year she died.  She was married to Thomas Tanner who died 24th September 1922 also at 60 School Street. Thank you.

Hi and welcome

Death transcriptions from 1929 onwards are very thin on the ground so you will need to search the full GRO index which is available at your nearest main library.  It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

It involves downloading the image for each quarter of each year searched, and checking for an entry (ie) 4 images per year

Hello Carole, thanks for message.  I have checked through the deaths and found 3 deaths for a Sarah Tanner but none of them were correct.  We were told Sarah was in the 90's when she died but this could be wrong , the only information I have is that she was married to Thomas and as far as I know she did not remarry.

Thanks

Hi

If she was about 90 when she died - that would put her death around the very late 1940's or early 1950's

Are there any family members who narrow down the year of her death to a particular family occasion (eg) she died the year before  (??) got married

Searching the full GRO index can be very time consuming without a rough idea of the year

Hello,

I can't find anymore information.  My mother says Sarah was alive in 1939 and she thinks she died between then and 1953 but we are not sure. All I know is that she had a shop at 60 School Street, Tirphil which is where her husband Thomas died. I have a death certificate for Thomas.  Gertrude (Gertie) her daughter looked after Sarah at 60 School Street, Gertie married Jack Young and they had a daughter called Shirley I know nothing about Shirley.  We believe that when Sarah died Gertie and family left the 60 School Street (the shop). I do not know where they went or what happened to the shop.

Thanks SUBI

Hi

The only way is to search the full GRO index from and including 1939.  1939 was the start of World War 2 - can your mum remember if Sarah was still alive when it ended - perhaps at the victory celebrations - which would narrow it down even more for you

Hi, my mother cannot remember. she remembers being at Sarah at the beginning of the warm she was sent there from London but cant remember how long she stayed there.  She went to the school Tirphil which was in the same street as Sarah's shop perhaps school records if there are any remaining could give me a clue.
