John Mahoney (c1847)

Hi there

I have no idea where in Ireland that John Mahoney (c1847) was born, I know he married a Bridget (unknown surname), also born in Ireland.

They left Ireland and went first to Manchester and then show up in the 1881 census in Arlecdon, Cumberland.

Does anyone have any idea where in Ireland he was born and also about his wife Bridget.

Have you traced John and Bridget in all possible English census records to see if a more exact place of birth than 'Ireland' is shown? (I see that you have Mahoney listed under Co. Cork at the bottom of your post)

To search in Ireland for church records (if they exist), etc. you need to know where they lived (parish if not actual townland).

Thanks for the info.

Marriage in 1881 would not be the same person as their youngest son was born in Manchester in 1878.

In 1881 census showed they were in Arlecdon, Cumberland  with their sons James (b1878) and Cornelius (b1880) and it also showed that both sons were born in Manchester and he and his wife Bridget were born in Ireland.

I have no other clues except that Bridget died in 1889 and it shows both sons and a daughter Mary (b1882) in 1891 census RG12; Piece: 4316; Folio 124; Page 11 they were inmates in the District Union Workhouse Preston quarter Whitehaven.

I tried FreeBMDS ie for Manchester births of James 1878 and Cornelius 1880 , then I tried elsewhere and eg with the first name Cornelius in either spelling of the surname Mahoney or Mahony , with success but nowhere near Manchester I thought.  But  don’t know Greater Manchester at all. Then I tried Lancashire and one appeared
