Hi Alison

The Glanfield surname is interesting as I am researching that surname in the Hacheston/Parham/Bredfield areas. My interest is a Sarah Glanfield who wed in 1781 to Francis Frost in Parham. I cannot seem to locate a relevant baptism for her.

Ben,

In regards to your Sarah Glanfield, have you tried the below website?
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

I put in Sarah Glanfield born 1763 (just a guess from the date she got married 1781- 18 (years old))
+/- 5 years and it comes up with quite a few results and I wasn't sure if any where the correct ones

I am having the same trouble trying to find birth records for my Sarah who was born in Boulge abt 1812 but I can't find here parents!!

Let me know

Alison,

Hi Alison

In the 1861 census there is a John Glanfield born in 1814 in Boulge, Suffolk with wife Sarah. I wonder if he is a brother of your Sarah Glanfield born in about 1812?

Boulge is just outside Bredfield. Not too far from where my Glanfield's came from. Boulge is not yet indexed on the IGI website according to their Hugh Wallis list.

Ben,

I have a feeling you maybe right about John being Sarah's brother. I think also my Glanfield's and yours must be related somewhere!! I had a look on familysearch.org for John but couldn't find him either, both he and Sarah don't seem to exist in terms on births and christenings!!

Hi Alison

Birth dates weren't generally recorded in parish records though occasionally a helpful incumbent would add the birth date to the baptismal entry.  The complete Boulge St Michael Parish Records 1621 - 1900 are available on microfiche from The Suffolk Record Office.  If you do not own a fiche reader, you should be able to use one at your local library.

Hi

I have noticed that some Suffolk baptisms show the mothers maiden name. Hacheston and Parham did for several decades in the 1700s and 1800s as luckily many of my Suffolk ancestors came from there.

It is only big city baptism church registers that give a date of birth more as opposed to rural parishes.

Hi Ben

I have noticed that some Suffolk baptisms show the mothers maiden name.

Prior to 1813 entries were just written into a register with usually blank pages.  The amount of information given varied very much according to the incumbent.  After 1813 pre-preprinted registers were used which had spaces for the "Abode" and "Occupation" of the father but not for the maiden name of the mother.  However, many clergy did include maiden names in their entries pre and post 1813.

It is only big city baptism church registers that give a date of birth more as opposed to rural parishes.

Again this varied.  I own several copies of original parish registers and within just one of these parishes whether or not the birthdate was given varies from decade to decade because of a change of clergy.

Hi Ben,

Thought I'd throw in my twopenneth, hope you don't mind.

I have searched in many Essex PRs and have found, like Rick, that whether or not the date of birth is shown is purely down to the current incumbent's whim, size of the parish didn't seem to be a factor because I found dates of birth in some very small Essex villages.  I even found in one village a family group with dates of birth but no accompanying baptism dates, mind you it was a "catch up" situation because the previous incumbent failed to record their baptisms.  ;D

Regards,
Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?
