William Dodderidge Ellis
« on: Thursday 05 March 09 13:52 GMT (UK) »
I have found a note saying William Dodderidge Ellis (c1850, Yealmpton, Devon) enlisted into the 19th Hussars on 26 June 1873.

Can anyone point me at a web site that may give his army records?

Hi merc2081

His army records should be in his discharge records which should be at The National Archives. Have you found him on any censuses after his initial enlistement date?

Here is a link to Soldiers Discharge documents at TNA.

He would probably have enlisted for 12 years, so I would look in the series for men discharged between 1883 and 1900. You will have to visit Kew and search in WO97, or wait for Findmypast to put them online.

You will certainly find him in the Muster Books and Pay Lists (WO12 and 16) starting for the one for 1873-1874.

Very nice group of medals, just missing the Khedive's Star.
He's on my Egypt 1882 roll but with no Tel-el-Kebir clasp (so that fits)

Thanks people  :)

Pity I can't locate him in any post 1871 census. I assumed he subsequently died/ was killed abroad. I'll have to have another look.

Wonder who sold the medals?  ::)

From the MSM medal roll:

Ellis, William D Sgt

Annuity £10, 8 January 1912. Group known: Queen's Egypt Medal (The Nile 1884/5 and Abu Klea, Saddle Tree Maker, 19th Hussars), LS & GC (Victorian, Cpl ST Maker, 19th Huss), MSM (George V) and Khedive's Star 1884. He was alive in 1926.

The book was published in 1995, so from when it was researched to the auction the Khedhive's Star disappeared. These were issued unnamed so I am sure whoever bought the medals has been able to replace it.

BTW...just because the MSM was awarded in 1912 it does not mean he was still serving. My GF received his when he was in his 70s. 29 years after leaving the army. The annuity MSM was used as a super LS & GC medal.

In 1881 the regiment was in Ireland but in 1891 the 19th Hussars were in Hounslow according to the information I have. They left for India in Sept of that year.
His LSGC would date to 1891 or maybe a bit later if he enlisted in 1873.

Ken,
Interesting to see in that MSM book that he group is described as having an 1884 Khedive's Star. Even that sounds like a replacement. As he's on the 1882 Egypt roll he should have the 1882 Star originally.

It gets better Neil (and Merc) - http://www.dnw.co.uk/medals/auctionarchive/searchcataloguearchive/itemdetail.lasso?itemid=23849

The author of the MSM roll (Ian McInnes) used a number of auction catalogues for his information. Maybe the pre-1995 purchaser found his was not entitled to that Khedive's Star and took it away. I do not know the ins and outs of the award of the Khedives Stars.

The DNW site gives his discharge date as 1901, and also that there are copies of his service papers. So they should be in Kew in the section for men discharged between 1900 and 1913.
