Chelsea / barracks
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 08:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

I am trying to find a relative (Gt Aunt) who was born in Chelsea according to the 1911 census.  I have access to all the indexes but can't seem to find her.  Her father was in the 1st Scots guards and at some point was stationed at Chelsea barracks and I'm wondering if it is a possibility she could have been born there.  How would I go about finding out?  Four years later my Grandfather was born in the Tower of London where his father was stationed at that time.  On the 1911 census her age is 4 but I have looked between 1904 and 1909 and whilst there are many Nora(h)'s, none from Chelsea.  Does Chelsea not appear in the indexes?  would it come under a different county or district?  If anyone can provide a way forward I would really appreciate it.

Thankyou

Teresa

Hi

Thanks for that.

Teresa

Edited:  I've just checked and none of the Nora Foxs were born in Kensington either.  If anyone knows anything about Chelsea Barracks and where records might be kept please let me know.

What about the thought, that she might well have been born out of the barracks, did she have any other names and what was mother's maiden name?

Hi
Thanks for replying again.

All I know is from the 1911 census.  Mother  Alice Eliza Fox nee Barker age 36 born Croydon: Norah Fox age 4 born Chelsea: John Fox age 2 born Battersea: Frederick Fox age 2months born London:  The last one is my grandfather and I have his birth certificate, I have also found John's as well.  I do know that Norah did marry and have at least two children one of which was a boy named Roy.  Not a lot of use I know.  The father was Hugh Robert Fox who was serving in the 1st Scots guards, Tower of London (in  1911).

If you can help me move forward I would be very grateful.

I did find Eileen Norah Fox born 1902 Kensington, but she does not fit into your details
also
Norah Elsie Fox born St Geo H Sq June QTR 1907, a possibility , this reg district  covers parts of Westminster which is not that far away from Chelsea barracks which I think was either in Kensington Ch St  or there is a barracks at Knightbridge just across Hyde Park

LM

PS Prince of Wales Barracks is in The Carriage Road , just below Rotten Row if you have a London map
I have a feeling the barracks in Kensington Church Street might have been demolished now

Hi Teresa

Nora's father's military record give his children's births as

Nora Elsie 12th March 1907 in London baptised 7th April 1907
John Willian Hugh 14th November 1908 in London baptised 31st January 1909
Frederick George 4th ? 1911 in London baptised 19th ? 1911
Francis Leach or Leake? 8th September 1912 in Cairo baptised 8th October 1912 Cairo

Hugh married Alice on 28th January 1905 at St Luke's Woodside Croydon. The details given for his next of kin when he enlisted in 1899 were for his father John, of Abbey House Omagh Ireland. Hugh's address on discharge in May 1920 was 274 Campbell Buildings Westminster Bridge Road. Hugh himself was born in the parish of Cloater? near Omagh in Tyrone and he was a grocer and clerk on enlistment.

First World War soldiers records are held at The National Archives at Kew.

Regards

Valda

Hi Valda

Wow?!  Thank you so much for this.  I didn't realise I could access War records, looks like I had better visit The NAtional Archives and see if there was anything else at all relevant.

Once again, Louisa Maud as well, thank you for taking the time to reply.
