hi  :)

can you tell us you gg grandfathers age when he died(1923)
trooper makes me think of cavalry but pilot is the sea assuming he would have
been too old to fly a plane
h m = Her Majesties trooper ?

where about did you find this information ?

all i know is that he married my great grandmother in portsmouth 1923 ( both were widowers & died 1929 in epsom aged 55

his occupation was insurance agent ...aged 50 yrs when he got married to my great grandmother louisa hannah taylor (nee kennard )

Troopships were normally know as "Troopers"

And HMT as in HMS is the usual prefix...

So HM Troopship, and him being a pilot fits rather well...As well as him being in Pompey

I'd have a dig via Royal Navy, Port of Portsmouth Authority, and Merchant Navy records to see if they throw anything up.

As for the census??

Blimey....errrmmm....Have you looked in the Portsmouth area for anything?

Dear Scimnet
Its all fasinating stuff - how would you go about researching all of these avenues -how can one access these records and the information you have quoted?  Do they have websites? I am very interested in the merchant navy records - where can they be found?

Fascinated by the troopships
