ELLIS of Paignton

Hi All

I am trying to take my paternal side back a further step. I have details for William Ellis and Rebecca Andrews who married in Paignton on 3/8/1827. As far as I know they had 5 children, namely, William (b1828) Ann (1830) Thomas (1832 my 2XGGrandad) Henry (1834) and Mary (1836).

I may have found Henry and Mary in the 1841 census with their father William (HO107/228/12) but Rebecca is not there. Instead the mother is down as Charlotte (b1820 in Ireland). William, Charlotte and Henry then reappear in the 1851 (HO107/1873/84/5) without Mary this time.

This may or may not be the correct family but it's the closest I've found so far.

What I think I need is to find a death for Rebecca somewhere between 1836 and the 1841 census and then a marriage between William and Charlotte between Rebecca's death and the 1841. I also would like to find out what may have happened to the first two children as I can't find them on a census either. Thomas was a fisherman and so probably doesn't appear as he was probably at sea.

I couldn't find a look up offer for the Paignton area but would anyone have any relevant parish records etc please?

It looks like Rebecca may have died around Mary's birth.

Hi Wendy

I think you are right  I've just had an e-mail from the Devon Records Office, very helpful people.

Rebecca was buried on 1/2/1837 age 31 which would make everything else fall into place. I have also found Ann on the 1841 a few miles away. One of the records also shows Charlotte's mother being there and she is called Franks
