Marton church, near Congleton
« on: Wednesday 11 March 09 22:08 GMT (UK) »
I notice from Genuki that Marton marriages from 1769 have not been deposited at Chester R O - does anyone know the reason why. Are they still at the church?
I am seeking a marriage for William Potts (b.1756-9)and Mary b.circa 1857

Many thanks Stan. I've had a quick look and there are only four Potts marriages. As this was a Potts stronghold I think I need to get the LDS film to see if there are any more.

For this period the only church licensed for marriages in the parish was Prestbury.

From the NE Cheshire marriage index, the only 2 possibilities are:

William Pott 14 Jun 1779 tailor of Ma and Mary Williamson at Prestbury.

08 DEC 1789 William Pott and Mary Clayton were from Poynton.

Deryck

Many thanks Deryck - this has certainly clarified the position. The first child I have found so far is 1782 so the 1779 marriage would be favourite. I'll have to see if I can find any "Tailor" connections as farming played a large part in the Potts heritage.

Do you happen to know when Marton was registered for weddings?

The Cheshire Record Office Catalog has this note for Marton  "Marton was one of a number of Cheshire chapelries which lost the right to solemnize marriages between 1754 and the mid-19th century. Marriage entries for those years will be found in the registers of the mother parish of Prestbury.". This was a result of Hardwicke's marriage act.

The earliest they would have restarted would be at the start of civil registration. However, a few searches on Cheshire BMD, suggest that marriages restarted around 1889.  I could not find these registers in the CRO catalog.

Deryck

Deryck, your help is greatly appreciated. Now that I know marriages did not take place in Marton the ones I have found in Prestbury (which I was dubious about) are beginning to fall into place. If marriages began again about 1889 it is quite feasible that the registers are still at the church.
