Hi, Can anyone please tell me if "Belle Vue", a stately Italian style home costing 4,000 pounds, built by Roland Loane in 1824 is still standing?  It was in Davey Street, Hobart, on the block bounded by Davey St, Molle Street, Fitzroy Place and Ansell Street.  Around 1826 it was rented by the government and became the Female Orphan School.  This building was used to accommodate the female emigrants from the 'Bussorah Merchant' and the 'Strathfieldsaye'.  I would also like to know the street number of "Belle Vue", if possible.

Thanks,

Sharon.

Sharon if you google maps the area you mention encompasses St Ann's Geriatric Hospital which was built in 1979. I think you will find that it is Antill Street not Ansell Street.

Perhaps the National Trust in Tasmania may be able to assist you with some information on the history of Belle Vue.

Cheers
Cando

Thanks for the correction Cando, it should be Antill Street.  My photocopy of the map is a bit blurry.  I'm not really after the history of Belle Vue - I'm wanting to know if it is still standing today, and if so, what its street number is.  I was hoping someone with local knowledge of the area may know the answer, or that someone like me (a descendant of a female emigrant) may know.

Hi Sharon

St Annes still stands it is now a retirement home and the address is given in the Hobart Directory as 142 Davey Street Hobart.

Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for that information.  I am thinking of taking a short holiday in Tasmania to visit some of the places where my ancestors lived and worked.  So I'm trying to find out what I can and 'reduce some of the legwork' before I make the trip.

Much appreciated!

Sharon.

Sharon, An email to the Hobart Library asking for help with any info they have etc might be helpful and make your visit more enjoyable.

Hi Charlotte,
 the following link may be helpful to you for sourcing some more info for the Belle Vue Orphanage. There is a reference to it in there as a place for housing girls;

http://www.femalefactory.com.au/FFRG/pdfs/QOS.pdf

St. Annes in Davey Street, Hobart occupies a large portion of land and has undergone many refurbishments and rebuilding over the years. There is however a portion of it which fronts onto Davey Street and is an original dwelling of some substance. Not sure though of it's history. You can see a photo of it at the following link;

There are certainly numerous other stately buildings bordering here too.
I hope this is a little help.
Also hoping it's OK to put links in as I've done.

Kind regards,
Peggle.

Hi Shazza
I also had ancestors on the same ship who were billeted at the Bellevue. Just wondering if you had found out anything further about the Bellevue or the passengers on the Bussorah Merchant? Or if you knew where I might look.
