Marriage at Kingston-upon Hull
« on: Thursday 12 March 09 22:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello from Notts.

I hope that someone can help me with a marriage and a baptism look up please.

The IGI says that John TODER of the Newark area married Elizabeth HOLE on June 13th 1823 at Holy Trinity Church, Kingston upon Hull.

I need confirmation from the parish register please, together with any other available information.  Also - Elizabeth was born around 1804 and if anyone could find her baptism and parents that would be brilliant.

Thanks in anticipation.

NC.

Hi NC

I couldn't see a baptism for Elizabeth in Hull Holy Trinity, but after a quick look at the census, is she the Elizabeth Toder in 1861 census Nottingham born Little Carlton, Muskham, Notts?  If so, you'll need to post a separate request for her details on the Notts board.

If you have access to ancestry there is a Stevens family tree which includes John Toder and Elizabeth, and you can contact the tree owner for information

Kind regards
Barbara

Hello Barbara

Thank you for that information.   I know that there are HOLEs around Little Carlton but the fact that John and Elizabeth married for some unknown reason in Hull, threw me a little.  It made me think that there was another HOLE branch that I didn't know about.

I don't have access to ancestry but I know a friend who has.  ;D

Do you have all the census information for them?  I found them from 1841 onwards

Muskham is quite a way from Hull, but the 1841 must be them, it shows son Henry Hole Toder.

Yes I do have the censuses for them but I have been searching for the marriage for ages in all the likely parish fiches in Notts.  I wasn't sure of Elizabeth's maiden name either but suspected HOLE.   I have no idea why they married so far away from home and hoped there might be a clue somewhere in Hull.  Both partners were wealthy - in the HOLE's case - very wealthy.

If you can get access or find someone with access to the Gale database of British Library 19th century newspapers, you may find something in the Hull Packet about the marriage (given that as you say they were from wealthy families).

I have Hull ancestors and recall that when I did have a free trial to Gale I found all sorts of material on them in the Hull Packet!

I wasn't sure of Elizabeth's maiden name either but suspected HOLE.

One of the children's birth certs would easily confirm that

eg  Mar 1839   Southwell    15   641        TODER    Frances

The IGI says that John TODER of the Newark area married Elizabeth HOLE on June 13th 1823 at Holy Trinity Church, Kingston upon Hull.

If this (IGI extracted) baptism is for a child of theirs then Elizabeth would have been heavily pregnant (or already had a babe in arms) at the time of the marriage - not uncommon then as now, but perhaps a reason to wed away from home?
