Painter Family
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 15:30 GMT (UK) »
I have managed to trace my father's side of the family back to the 1700's when my great great great grandfather David Painter was born in Newburgh.  I am trying to trace when his father, David Painter (my great great great great grandfather) was born and who his parents were.

I have a marriage certificate for my gt gt gt gt grandfather when he married Catherine Burt in 1786 in Newburgh.  Unfortunately it does not state who his parents were only that he was servant to Peter Painter in the Abbey.

Can any tell me how i would be able to find out who his parents were?

Would anyone know which Abbey it would refer to?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi texmex

Sorry I can't help with your search for parents, but 'The Abbey' you refer to would more than likely have been LINDORES ABBEY.

I 'Googled' - 'Newburgh Abbey' :) but if you click here
http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/newburgh/newburghfife/index.html it'll take you to the information.

"David, 1st Earl of Huntingdon and younger brother of both Malcolm IV and William I, founded Lindores Abbey on a site at the east end of today's Newburgh in 1191."  from Undiscovered Scotland

With that sort of date you might even get further back for your family  :o

Many thanks for your reply. I have read the link that you send me about Lindores Abbey.

"Lindores Abbey's end came in 1559 when a rabble roused by John Knox's distinctive brand of religious intolerance "overthrew the altars, broke up statues, burned the books and vestments and made them cast aside their monkish habits".

Do you know if this means that the Abbey was not in existence after 1559?

If this is the case then it may not have been Lindores Abbey where my gt gt gt gt grandfather was a servant in.

Do you know of any other Abbey's.

Hi again texmex

Keep on 'Googling' and you'll find all sorts of stuff ... have a look here for a reference to Newburgh Abbey:

The north coast of Fife on the banks of the River Tay had quite a few abbeys ... Balmerino to the east then working westwards Abernethy, Lindores (a bit inland) and Newburgh.  There may be more  :)
