Thornton by Pocklington - 1811 Marriage
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 20:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

If anyone has access to Thornton parish records I would very much appreciate a check on the marriage of William Hayton to Jane Hodgson on 10th Dec 1811.

William and Jane are in County Durham for the 1841 census where he was a Navy Pensioner. Their son Henry was also with them and he was baptised at Pocklington in 1821.
I have a William Hayton who was baptised at Whitby in 1813 but the parents are given as William Hayton and Jane Grant, so I would like to know if Jane was a widow when she married William.

Regards,
Colin

Dear Colin,

I looked up this marriage in the register; William was a bachelor and Jane a spinster both of this parish and both signed their own names.

The marriage was by banns and the witnesses were Ernest Scarborough and G John Torett.

This appears to be the baptism of their first child in Thornton:

George Hayton son of William Hayton laborour of Melbourne and Jane daughter of George Hodgson of Melbourne born: 1 Feb 1812 bapt: 9 (2?) Feb 1812.

This is probably Jane's baptism:

Jane Hodgson daughter of George Hodgson of Melbourne farmer and Jane daughter of John Moor of Melbourne
born: 17 May 1792 bapt: 20 May 1792

In 1794 a George Hodgson was baptised mother Mary Moor and on IGI there is a marriage for George Hodgson and Mary Moore on 27 Feb 1781 so I think Jane's mother should in fact be Mary.

Hope this helps.

Hello Pinetree,

It's very good of you to check those out, thank you very much.

It has helped to eliminate that marriage for the one I'm looking for. In the 1841 census my Jane is age 63 and born Ireland, and husband William Hayton is age 74. In later census, their son Henry gives his birthplace as Pocklington c1821 so it sounds as though there will be some family connection between to the two Williams.

Regards,
Colin

Dear Colin,

Sorry it was not the right marriage but useful to eliminate it.

I can have a look at the Pocklington register for you sometime if that would help, although a baptism from 1821 probably wont have much more information.

Thanks for the offer Pinetree. Henry's baptism is on the Familysearch IGI but it would help to know what the father's occupation was. What I am trying to establish is whether the William born in Whitby is a brother to Henry, so if you could check on the baptism sometime, I would be very grateful.

Regards,
Colin
