John Davies, Llanyre
« on: Sunday 15 March 09 11:55 GMT (UK) »
John Thomas Davies was born in Llanyre in 1876 according to his wedding certificate and the 1901 census shows he was living in St Harmon. His father was WilliamDavies (deceased pre 1904) The only possible family on the 1881 census shows the father William as being 67. How do I confirm this is right?

Hello Kreigcf
I think I have found the particular census page you refer to. I notice it details children of ages from 30 to 1 and that William Davies age 69 has a wife aged 40. This is obviously a second marriage and therefore it is quite possible William Davies is the father.

Although William Davies was born in Llanyre there is nothing to say his family lived there in 1881 unless you have other family information you are using so there is the burden to prove you have the right family here.

I would apply for John Thomas Davies birth certificate - I can only see one on freebmd for a John T Davies listed for Rhayader registration district which covers the village of Llanyre -this was SQ 1878

If you search on John Davies for Rhayader for a period of say 1874 to 1878 ( people do not always give truthful ages when getting married) there is only one option of

John Davies JQ 1876 Rhayader 11b 172

When you make the application you can ask if they would check the father is William Davies and the place of birth is Llanyre. This certificate would then give you the Mothers name and maiden name. You could then find a marriage from this information and then cross reference the information against the census records.

With the commonality of surnames such as Davies - it is frequently difficult to orientate yourself on the right line - and therefore the purchase of certificates or checking of parish registers is essential to establish proof.

Good luck

Have sent off for Birth Certificate, looking at the census's going back it seems William was married before, a step son is mentioned also. plenty of things to do!
