William Coates & Co Winemerchants-completed

Hello All,

This is a bit of a longshot  but I should like to as if anyone has any knowledge / background information on a  wine merchants by the name of William Coates & Co. Their address in 1872 was 24-25 High St, Whitechapel.
I am also keen to  hear from anyone researching this family.

Hi Scatty,

I was very surprised to find you are also interested in William Coates & Co. I know it as a dressing gown making company formed by my grandfather's grandfather around 1870 originally as just William Coates but changed later to William Coates and co in about 1905. It was located in Wood St/Addle st London until 1940 when it was burnt down in the blitz. I am very interested to know what happened to it after that. Did it become a wine seller?

Andy,
Sorry for the delay in replying. As far as I am aware the William Coates & Co, 25 High St, Whitechapel  which opened about 1820  and 18 Adam St, Adelphi were wine merchants which was before the time frame you quoted. There are records of this firm held at The Guildhall Library.

Could there have been another firm of the same name, or possibly a later generation of the family?
I would be interested  to hear if this is the case.

All I can think is that the wine merchants you mention went bankrupt prior to 1905 and the name of the company was resold to William Coates my Grandfather's grandfather ? I dont think its possible for there to be two companies with the same name, unless there is some subtle difference in the name. I have been to the national archives at Kew and found the two company names, William Coates Ltd, formed before 1890 and William Coates and Co formed some time after that.

Hello Andy,
Good to hear from you again. At  least three generations of my husbands Penfold men folk were employed by this company  and I have been trying for some time now  to find any employee records if they still exist. If you should come accross these in the future please let me know.

I found this very interesting, I am hoping you may be able to offer some advice about the earthenware they used. What were the time periods of said use etc
