Ethel---Gwendoline
« on: Wednesday 18 March 09 15:40 GMT (UK) »
Could the 2 names above be inter-changeable.

I have Harry Shearwood marring Ethel Pexton in Hull in 1913. They had a son Edgar G. in 1914 (HES/88/179)and a daughter Gwendoline (HES/94/29)in 1916 both in Hull.

Looking at the Yorkshire BMD website last night I found the death of Gwendoline Shearwood  also in 1916 but at the age of 24 years (Reference Hessle/Hull/HES/40/332). I then did a search for Gwendoline Pexton in 1892 but only found a birth for Ethel Pexton in 1891.

It doesn't appear there were any more children born to Harry & Gwendoline.
Could she have died in childbirth?
In the time of grief could a mistake take place and the daughter's name(Gwendoline) be entered instead of the mother's(Ethel) for the death records?

Many help appreciated.
Thanks,
shearg

I have never heard of those names being interchangeable, but people are often known as names which have no resemblance to their own!

There could be a human error in the registrations.

Looks like you will have to get some certs to confirm if these are the same people!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi

The only death for a Gwendoline on freebmd in 1916 is for one age 0. ie the one that was born in 1916 - the scan copy of the sheet confirms the age.

Looks like Edgar George Shearwood - 14.4.1914 - lived to a good age - he died in Sept 2002 at the age of 88.

Well I think I found the human error

On the FreeBMD site, like Rosie said, Gwendoline's age was 0 but on the Yorkshire BMD site( I just checked again) her age was given as 24, maybe the mother's age.

Laurina, I find the fact that you found Edgar's death so exciting. Can you tell me any more, such as where he died or where I could find the info myself. Did it mention anything about him being married or a widower. Guess I will now search for a marriage for him. I find it so sad I didn't find him before he died.

thanks for all the help,

Just to add,

I never realized it before but Harry Shearwood lost his daughter Gwendoline and his father, William Hiram at Glanford Brigg, Lincs. in the same qtr. of the same year

I found the death entry online on ancestry - He died in Sep 2002 in Hull - Register Number B75A District 5501B Entry Number 151. It gives his birth date as 14 Apr 1914 so seems to fit. You would have to buy the certificate to find out anymore.

I was surprised by the name you had for Harry's father. In the 1901 census a Harry Edgar Shearman, aged 9, is living with elderly parents George Richard Shearwood and Ann Shearwood.

Thanks Laurina for getting back to me.

If I sent the reference information you just gave me for Edgar's death to the East Riding Registration Service could I get a copy of his death for £7?

Sorry George Richard was his father. William Hiram Shearwood that died in 1916 was Harry's brother.

Thanks again,
