marriage of mary oliver/oxfordshire
« on: Wednesday 18 March 09 16:02 GMT (UK) »
Mary Oliver bn. 1746 in Finstock, oxfordshire married a Joseph Launchbury in Charlbury in 1784.  Does anyone know if this was Marys first marriage or was she a widow (previously married to an Oliver)?

Hi Oliver,
the only way I can think to find this info is in Parish Records.
You could try Genuki but I'm not  sure if they have Oxfordshire.
Otherwise google "Charlbury Parish Records" and see what turns up.
good luck,
Leonie.

 Hi Oliver,
Go with Leonie's advice and perhaps you can also look at the IGI on familysearch site- if it doesn't turn up in your googling.
Pre 1837 stuff is sheer slog ::)

Hello rene oliver,

Welcome to RootsChat.

I wonder what is the source of your information about Mary's birth date and place, and the marriage of Joseph & Mary, and also what makes you suspect that Mary might have been a widow when she married Joseph.

In general, the IGI (International Genealogical Index) at http://www.familysearch.org has very poor coverage of Oxfordshire.

Although I notice that it does have (as you are probably aware) the baptisms of some six children to Joseph LAUNCHBURY (variously spelled) & Mary between 1785 and 1798.  The same batch also has a 1779 baptism of a son Thomas to a William OLIVER & a Mary.

The best source for Oxfordshire records is, I understand, the Oxfordshire Family History Society.

Here is a link to a thread which has a great deal of information (posted by Valda) re where to find Oxfordshire records:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,250067.0.html

I would suggest that you have a look at that thread, and also put your query on the Oxfordshire board with as much information as you have.

Good luck!

Kind regards,

JAP

Hi there.  Thanks for replying.  I am new to this discovery business and need all the help I can get at times.  So no day is a good day for me.  New to a computer too, so things I think I have safely stored away never see the light of day again.  No doubt I will win  one of these days.  Nearer 70 than 60 so these `good` days get less and less.  But hey, the sun is shining an d it is good to be alive e.

Regards,  Rene Oliver

That's the spirit Rene.  :D
If you're new to computers I hope you have a good genealogy program.
The easiest one to get is LEGACY, it's free, easy to use, and is often advertised at the top or bottom of these pages.
Using such a program helps with the losing stuff bit.
Legacy also connects direct to the LSD FamilySearch web site which is a great help.

Hi Rene

I have transcripts for Charlbury

- there is no other information on that marriage other than that it was by banns,  looking at the other entries around that time,  the ones which were for widow(er)s do seem to be noted so I would say there is a good chance that Oliver was her maiden name.

Ok - I have now had time to look a bit further - I will take back what I said up there  :D

There are only 2 mentions of the surname Oliver in the Charlbury registers beween 1740 and 1800,  the marriage already mentioned and a baptism in 1779 of Thomas s/o William & Mary Oliver of Finstock,  there is no baptism for a Mary Oliver of Finstock around the time we would be looking.

From the Oxford Marriage index there is a marriage in 1775 (26th Sept) in Stonesfield, which is very close to Finstock of William Oliver to Mary Hancock of Finstock.  I could not see a burial for William in the Charlbury registers which cover Finstock - but it could possibly be in Stonesfield and I don't have those registers.

There is a baptism in the Charlbury registers
1747 4th Nov Mary House Hancock d/o Elizabeth Hancock of Charlbury base born which would fit with the dates given.  So I will have to backtrack and say it is quite probable that Mary was a widow when she married Joseph Launchbury,  though it would be more convincing if a burial for her first husband William Oliver could be located.
