Belfast Schools

The foundation stone of the Belfast Academical Instution was laid in 1810 and it was formally opened in 1814. Until the middle of the nineteenth century it was both a school and a university ... http://tinyurl.com/3k3zow The Belfast Old Instonians Association was formed in 1911.

Belfast High School opened in 1854. The School was originally in Glenravel Street in Belfast, where it remained until 1963, when it moved to the current site in Jordanstown. In the school's history there have only been seven head teachers. The first three appear to have been members of the same family...

Belfast Royal Academy was founded in 1785 and is the oldest school in the city. Originally situated near St. Anne’s Cathedral in what is now Academy Street, it was transferred to the Cliftonville Road in 1880, when the present building was erected. For more than a century the school was named Belfast Academy. In 1888 Queen Victoria granted permission for the school to style itself the Belfast Royal Academy.

In 1865, the foundation stone of Methodist College, Belfast (MCB), was laid by Sir William McArthur, a Londonderry businessman, before he went to England and became Lord Mayor of London. The College opened its doors in 1868. http://methody.biznetservers.com/dsp_sub.cfm/page/Historycollege

St Mary's Christian Brothers Grammar School opened at Divis Street, Belfast, on 12th November 1866. St Patrick's was opened in Donegall Street in 1867 and St Malachy's opened in Oxford Street in 1874 thanks to a bequest from a Mrs McGill.
