19th Century Australian Mariners
« on: Saturday 21 March 09 07:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi
my GG Grandfather John Muir Moyes was a ships engineer in the late 19th century, working out of Sydney, and sailing regularly to NZ and beyond, he immigrated to Australia from Scotland with his family when he was 12, would any one know how he would have gotten his training to become an engineer back then.

regards

Hi Jeff (and welcome to RootsChat)

Unfortunately, not a direct reply to your question, but have you searched this site

http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/   (Crew/Passenger List for ships sailing into Sydney - on going project)

If you search for just the surname Moyes, you get quite a few for John Moyes, British crewman, b.abt.1840. If that's him, you can see which ships he sailed on, and from what ports.

Les
de Belin, Swindail, Willcock, Williams, Moore, Watts, Searjeant, Watson, McCready, Reid, Spink, de Lancey, Van Cortland, and of course, Smith!
