Relatives missing from census
« on: Saturday 21 March 09 15:51 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for John Mounsey Potts and his wife Sarah Ann Potts, who are missing from the 1891 census.  John was born in Workington in Cumberland in 1841, and Sarah was born in Toxteth Park in Liverpool in 1852.

They were married in 1872 at St. Michael in Toxteth Park.  Their children are as follows:

Sarah Elizabeth Potts (1875)
John Marshall Potts (1877 - my Great Grandfather)
George M Potts (1880)
May Orrell H Potts (1885)
Thomas Potts (1885)
Henry Marshall Potts (1886 -1887)
Henry Potts (?????)
Robert Lewis Potts (1889)

John Mounsey Potts was a mariner.  He was absent from the 1881 census.  Sarah was the head of household on that census, her occupation is noted as mariners wife, but the enumerator has crossed a line through this.  They are all missing from the 1891 census, and miraculousy turn up in Toxteth Park for the 1901 census!

Does anyone know of any information which will help me in my search?

Hi Hippy

In the original post - you mention a child May Orrell Potts but I don't think she belongs to this family

Only one birth on freebmd for a May O Potts between 1885-1886 but there is an 1891 entry which includes a May O Potts aged 5 as the daughter of John H and Jane H Potts. John was a mariner. The freebmd entry shows as May Orrell H Potts

Although it's not the family you are seeking - you may want to have a look  RG12; Piece: 2971; Folio 51; Page 36

Hi Rosie

I've just searched on 2929 f100 and omitted a page number but still no joy on Ancestry.  Wonder how many other rellies have been "lost" by them
