which jane taylor?
« on: Monday 23 March 09 11:59 GMT (UK) »
hello,im wondering if anyone can advise me on this one.ive got a jane taylor born canterbury, the wife of john may born 1860 canterbury.on the 1881 john is a hawker, his wife is a ragsorter and her date of birth is given as 1862.on the 1891 john is a fish hawker and and jane is a fish shop keeper.on the 1871 ive found two jane taylors, one born 1861,canterbury,which is very close to the birthyear of johns wife, her father is william taylor born 1830 brighton, hes a licensed victualler,on the 1861 hes an army sergeant.on this census janes birthyear is 1856.the other jane taylor is on the 1871 born canterbury in 1865,the daughter of william taylor again, this one born 1834 canterbury, a fish seller.on the 1861 hes a general dealer.given the association with selling fish im tending towards this one.whats discouraging me is janes birthdate of 1865 on the 1881.this means she would have been 15 when she married(o/n/d 1880 canterbury 2a 1296).having said that, although 1st janes birthdate is very close on 1871,its much earlier(1856) on 1861.i realise ill probably need the marriage certificate to settle this, but in the meantime id appreciate any opinions. im tempted to put fish selling james on my tree, but his is a big family and theres a lot to take off if publican/army william comes back, many thanks, nel.

Hello :)

I might also be tempted to add the fish seller to my tree (you called him James in your last sentence?) b/c it makes sense that Jane would meet her future husband as a result of the common occupation. However, I would not do it without getting the marriage certificate to be sure. It would be a real shame if you ended up with the wrong tree.
