Welsh Translation from Family Bible - Pierce
« on: Monday 23 March 09 12:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello, can anyone help with translation of a few lines of Welsh written in May 1875? Thank you very much

 (BLACK COVER, WELSH PRINT THROUGHOUT)
BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY – THREE SHILLINGS – (ON THE FRONT OF THE BIBLE)

Handwriting inside front of bible – this piece in English
“William Pierce his book bought in May 5 1875.”

(Pencil line drawn underneath)

 then the Welsh portion
“Fey nyled ydyw bad o ddefnydd tra b’wyf byw a threulio mywyd is y rhad er clad i’r iesu gwiw”

(Another Pencil line drawn underneath) – then further Welsh ...

Cawn ddwyn ein palmwydd yn ein llaw a blaeddio’r gongcwest ddydd a ddaw
Yn nheyinas nef
???? nef
Pladwich ac ofni mai
Docon o fauced ynddo   (or it could be)    docon o  fawed ynddo
Ef  (or it could be a ‘y’)

Inside cover at the back is written in English ...
Mr William Pierce
His Bibel bought in the Eyer 1875 of Our Lord Jesus Christ and also gave his Heart to God in the month of May the same Eyer 1875 and it on his happy day to heven wher Plashass neva Dies
(I think he was struggling with writing English, as Dies was written Days, and changed to Dies)

My debt is to be of use while I live and to live my life while on earth in praise of the worthy Jesus.

We can bear our palm-leaves in our hands and shout victory one day to come in the kingdom of heaven.

Next piece mostly indecipherable: Do not fear that...  plenty of life in it/him? He...

Lastly:" where pleasures never die"?
I think happy day to heaven would be his birthday.

Hi Pinot, absolutely fantastic !!!! Thank you so much.  I am so pleased we have finally got this translated. They are lovely words and he sounds totally committed to Jesus!  I don't know much about William Pierce, only that he was born in Mold, and that he became a lay preacher, probably around the time of the bible in 1875.  I don't know how he fits in the family yet either, but I think the connection must come from the Jones side, also from Mold. He was married to Margaret, and she used to tear pages out of the bible to light her pipe!!! I presume she did this dreadful act after poor William went to heaven!!! I am sure he would not be amused!

I will pass the information on to my Aunt, who is in her late eighties, she owns the bible, she will be so happy.  Thank you once again.

Kind regards

Caz

Hi Caz,
You're welcome; I should have added that the quotations are most likely from hymns that W.P. was familiar with (as I am not, unfortunately).
