1911 census help needed
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 14:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I can't find my G Grandmother Margaret Jane Tipping on the 1911 census.  She was born in Toxteth Park, so I assumed that she would be there.

She was born in 1885 and had a sister called Elizabeth (1889), their parents were Frederick Tipping (1865 - 1897) and Josephine Tipping (nee Lezart - 1867).   In 1891 they were all living at 47 Northumberland Street, Toxteth Park.

In 1898 a year after Frederick died, Josephine married Douglas Charles Stuart Murdoch in West Derby, Liverpool.  I found Margaret on the 1901 census as a visitor to her mother's home in Crompton, Manchester.  There is no mention of Elizabeth on this census.

Josephine and Douglas have 3 children of their own on this census.  I have absolutely no idea where Margaret usually lived, or how long she hadn't been living with her mother.  Seems impossible to find Elizabeth on this census (1901) too.

I thought that Margaret lived in Toxteth Park her whole life, she married and brought up her children there.  She died in 1962 at Newsham General Hospital, residing at Tunnel Road at the time of death. :-[

When I have tried to input information on the 1911 census I keep hitting a brick wall.  Thought that Eliabeth may have got married and that, Margaret might have been staying with her sister and brother in-law.  Found lots of Elizabeth Tippings getting married, but not in Liverpool.

Not finding either sister.  V V frustrating >:( >:( >:(

How can I be accurate in inputting information when I don't know where she lived?  I wanted the census to tell me this!!!

Can an expert help please ;D ;D ;D

Thank you

PS  Margaret married John Marshall Potts in St. Clement, Toxteth Park in 1915.  He was living with his parents at the time of the census, so this is not an option.   Have looked for Josephine and Douglas in Crompton, but, don't know any streets there so I can't get anywhere.  Tried just looking in Crompton without inputting street names and nothing comes up.

The details from the 1901 census would have helped since the name Ruby Harriet born 1899 is quite distinctive.

I think you will find that if you search for Ruby Harriet Murdoch on the 1911 census you will find them living in the Wirral, Cheshire - Douglas and Josephine with children Kempton, Dorris J, Douglas and Eric.

Do you know for sure that Elizabeth survived?

To know if anybody else is living in the household you would need to pay for either the transcription or to see the image.  I've tried both names Margaret and Elizabeth and also the surname Tipping in the household but with no results.

As Elizabeth was four years younger than Margaret, if she wasn't in the household in 1901 then I would be looking in the deaths, although I don't see one.  You sound as though you know that she survived - how?

Choose surname Murdoch
Drop down Location to show Cheshire
Put Wirral in the residential place
Other members of the household, put Ruby

Can't get it to show Margaret Tipping, Suz is cleverer than me!

Hello to MaryA and suzard,  MaryA will you stop typing so fast ;D ;D ;D  Can't keep up!!!

How do you find this info?  I find the 1911 census asks people to be so accurate.  I tried to put just the County but it wants a street name too.

Found nothing from just Wirral and Cheshire.

MaryA, please do not type anything before I've had a chance to post this!!!!

Many, many thanks
