1871 and 1891 MANLEY
« on: Thursday 17 February 05 17:41 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for William Manley born 1861 in Hemyock Devon, son of John.
On 1881 census he is staying with his sister in Derby and in 1901 he is with his brothers in Wales.

In 1871 he would be a child, so why is he not at home (4 Cornhill Hemyock. RG10/2366 pg 11)? Or is he in service?
Where did he go in 1891, did he return to Devon like his brother Fred?

Can anyone find him in 1871 and 1891??

many thanks
Jane

In 1891, there are the following :

Manley, William 34 Hemyock, Devon or Devonshire Head  Lambeth  London
Manley, William 34 Hemyock, Devon Or Devonshire Head  Durleigh  Somerset

The second William has Miller as his occupation. You don't happen to know what he or his family did for a job ?

In 1881 william is recorded as a labourer in Derby (staying with his sister) and in 1901 he was a coal miner in wales with 2 of his brothers.

He was one of 13 and all siblings seemred to be manual workers. (one a postman)
His father had also been a labourer at diff times and a letter carrier, reputedly with one leg!!

So I don't really know what to think.
Any ideas.

Did he marry? would a wife give a clue as to where they met, to which one he is ?!

thanks Jane

I have just received details of William Manley in Llantrisant,Glamorgan 1901 census and it gives his wife and his children.

Llantrisant, Glam:
William 39 (b1862) Hemyock Devon Coalminer Hewer
Sarah 35 (b1866) Churchford Devon
Albert 18 (b1883) Hemyock Devon Coalminer Hewer
Ernest 16 (b1885) Hemyock Devon Coalminer Hewer
William 14 (b1887) Hemyock Devon Coalminer Boy
Mary 13 (b1888) Hemyock Devon
Sarah 8 (b1893) Tonyrefail Glam
Agnus (female?) 5 (b1896) Tonyrefail Glam
Stanley 2 (b1899) Tonyrefail Glam
Davey 1(b1885) Hemyock Devon Coalminer Hewer   (eiither this profession is wrong or his age should be 6 - still quite young to be down the mine?!)

Would this be any help in identifying William in 1891?

Thank s

Jane

Thanks to you both for finding William

I have noticed the Davey incident.

How can you choose which fact to rely on ?

If his age was recorded wrong and he was really 10, then a profession in coalmine and being born in Hemyock (before they moved to Wales - there is a gap between children) could also be a possibility.
The profession bit could be wrong and he is only a babe, especially with the welsh form of Davey.

Which part of the information would you think was the more reliable?
Will we never know until the next census is released?

I'm new to this, so any guidance would be grateful?

thanks again for all your help
Jane
