Stetchworth - "almsman"

John Bowyer died 20 August 1855 in Stetchworth (no address given).  Under occupation is entered "Almsman" and beneath that Blacksmith.  I know he was a blacksmith but does the almsman imply that either he was receiving alms from a charity or living in an almshouse?  And in either case are there any records of the charity concerned likely to have survived.  He was in his 70s and died of "old age" so unlikely to have been administering the charity.
