Harwich Baptism lookup
« on: Sunday 29 March 09 19:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am new to this so I hope that I am in the right place.  I am having difficulty tracing my ggg grandmother her name was Louisa Elizabeth Moyse and I believe she was born in 1942/43 in Harwich, Essex, her father was Joseph Moyse and he was a shipwright but I am not sure about her mother or if they were from harwich at all.

Thanks
Louise

Hi Louise,

Welcome to Rootschat.  You'll find it's a great site.

What do you already know about Louisa?  Have you searched censuses etc?
By the way, I'm assuming she was born 1842/43, and not 1942/43?

Hi Yorkslass,

Yes, sorry I did mean 1842/43!  I have her on the 1871 census married to James Charles Hall my ggg grandad and on the 1881 and 1891 census married to William H Rowe.  I know from her marriage certificate that her father was Joseph Moyse, shipwright but I can't find her on any earlier census returns.

Hello again Louise,

I'm still looking!
Think I've found her on the 1861 census, but transcribed as Louise Moyce.

RG09/75 Folio 129, page 6

Marylebone, London.
She's living with a Margaret Evans,  Dressmaker,
Mary Ann Worthing, also a dressmaker,
then Louisa E Moyce   Unmarried  18  dressmaker, born Harwich, Essex.

I can understand the difficulty - there are so many ways the surname Moyse could have been spelt!

Think I've found Louisa's parents on the 1841 census, but FindMyPast have Joseph transcribed as Moysi

HO107/344 Folio 29, Page 17

Tendring, Harwich St Nicholas,
Church Street,
Joseph Moysi     20     Shipwright      born in county
Susanna   "        19                            born in county

Hi,

Thanks for your help.  This all looks promising I thought I had tried all the ways of spelling Moyse!

Thanks again
Louise
