Scotland to USA - Charles Glen
« on: Monday 30 March 09 15:23 BST (UK) »
Can any kind person help me to find the records for Charles Halliburton Glen, born march 1879 in Cadder, Scotland to parents, John & Agnes Glen.
I am trying to find out when he left Scotland for America. All I know is he was a Batchelor and did not marry until about 1909, in Qunlan, Hunt County, Texas.

Hi Lance
Still not immigration record, alas, but this might narrow it down some:

In 1910, Texas, Hunt, Quinlan, he is with his FIL R. W. Matthews, listed as Charley Glenn. Also wife Mollie, (second marriage for her) (first marriage for Charles) and Tom Glenn, age 18 months, married 2 years.. This does not provide year of immigration.

By 1920, he is in Texas, Harris, Houston, with wife Mary C, son Lee May (sic) 16, daughter Beatrice (14), to USA 1904

By 1930, he is in Texas, Harris, Houston, with wife Lena and stepdaughter Lillian Andrews. To USA 1905 on that one.

Incidentally, Lena Andrews is on 1920 census, married, with dtr Lillian also in Houston.  Both men are carpenters.

I did not find him on Ellis Island records. It's possible he sailed directly to Texas, possibly Galveston??

Regards,
Valerie

Thanks again.
R.W. Matthews is the mother on Mary Jane Mollie Matthews, who firstly maried R.R.Warren and had 2 sons. She then marries Charles Glen, in Kaufman. Think she was pregnant with their son Tom, when they married in June 1908.
Never found a death date for mary Jane ( nee Mollie Matthews) Glen.
If Charles Glen did not come via Galveston, it is possible he came via Canada.
Kind Regards.

I have found a Charles Glen who emigrated from Glasgow in 1898 for the Azores, arriving at the port of St.Michaels (Sao Miguel). Shown as born 1878.
Perhaps he worked as a carpenter on ships.

There is just a chance he traveled into Galveston TX -  the immigration database is off line at the moment but you can send an enquiry email from this link:

For details of what passenger lists are available on line -

Just so people don't duplicate previous efforts, a prior thread that mentions Charles Glen & others:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,370962.0.html
