Help please - Bishop and Oliver
« on: Monday 30 March 09 23:38 BST (UK) »
I have been very grateful for help given in teasing out family who emigrated to New Zealand. In particular I was able to find out information about Elizabeth Frankham (nee Bishop)  and Deborah Gribble (nee Bishop) See following post.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,361744.0.html

Elizabeth and Deborah were sisters who travelled to New Zealand in 1873. I have now found that they were followed there definitely by another sister and probably by a brother during the period 1878 to 1881.

Edith Clara Bishop was born in 1857 in Somerset England.
She married Robert Oliver in New Zealand in 1881. They had 7 children:
Alfred Bishop 1894,
Eva Laura Helen 1898,
Mabel Louisa 1890
William 1888
Edith Rosa 1883
Margaret Gwenlian 1884
John Robert 1886
Robert died in 1918 and Edith in 1935 and they are buried in Waikaraka cemetary.

Charles Bishop was born in 1852 in Somerset England. I have already done some investigary work on him. See earlier post
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,337499.0.html
I am reasonably sure that Charles died in 1910 and is buried in Waikumete cemetary.
For a while I thought he might be the Charles Bishop who travelled out on the Taranaki with his family in 1879 but I have now discounted this. (I have identified the Taranaki Charles Bishop as a separate person in earlier censuses AND my Charles Bishop was widowed in 1878)
I think my Charles decided to seek a new life in New Zealand after his wifes early death in childbirth and followed his two older sisters to New Zealand, taking his younger sister Edith with him.
If Charles is buried in Waikumete he married Maragaret in New Zealand There is a possible marriage to Margaret Geddes in 1882 - and possible  children
Stepehen Alexander 1896
Walter John 1891
James Neophilus 1885
Charles Henry 1883
Catherine Violet 1880
William Edward 1893
Elizabeth Mabel 1889
Margaret Jeanette 1887

I am keen to find out exactly when Charles and Edith travelled to New Zealand and on what ship. It was  in the period after the death of Charles's wife in 1878 and before Edith's marriage in 1881. I have looked at various shipping lists and done searches on old papers but not found them. I know that sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can help - or someone more experienced in searching these lists.

I also want to find out what the families did in New Zealand and where they lived. There were several Charles Bishops - my Charles was an engineer. I am particularly interested in any engineering or church connections. Both families appear to have attended Wesleyan churches which would tie up with their earlier histories.

Once again, thank you for any help. Whenever anyone in my family tree disappears now I will assume that they went to New Zealand. I knew that there were connections but I did not realise how many!

PS to above

I have since found a death notice in the UK which confirms that the Charles Bishop buried in Waikumete IS my Charles Bishop.

Firstly, my public thanks to Janette for the  imformation she has sent me. This includes the information that Charles died in 1910 in the Auckland Mental Hospital - Whau Asylum.

I wonder if the records of the asylum for this period are available for public access anywhere. I have found various references online including a paper with references to asylum casebooks 1900-1910. I would like to find out why Charles was admitted and what he died of - at a comparatively young age.

I am also still looking to establish when he arrived in Auckland. I have traced his proabable journey as far as Sydney where he arrived on the LIguria in November 1880. He was in Auckland by the time he married in 1882.

Thanks again

Intention to Marry Notices (ITM's) :

These are only indexed up to 1881.

After 1881,  the place and date of marriage are needed for an ITM look-up.

[Charles BISHOP - Margaret GEDDES marriage was in 1882. ]
