Wow, well done finding him in 1861. I came up with a total blank when I searched - but then, I was still looking in Wales, I think. ::)

Interesting note by the address, although I can't read it properly.  And there are two more Hurn gypsy travellers above this family, and a couple more gypsies on the page.

In ancestry there is a 1916 WW1 pension record for an Oscar Herring b about 1894 aged 22.  It's actually a reservist enrolment for the 21st Welch it says.

address -  Iravelly Curavan Neat Pembroke

Reads to me as  - travelling caravan near Pembroke.   He is 22 and a peg and basket (?) maker

There's an Oscar Herring birth 1923, Narberth 11a 2273

Looks like the parents were Thomas Herring and Rose A Probert married 1922.   mmmh.   Don't know if they belong to you.

Oscar belonged to a very large family of romanies called variously Heron/Herron/Hearn  and Herring. They also adopted alias surnames such as Brown Baker and Young. So a post on the Travelling people board would probably be a great help to you :) good luck

ive sadly come to realize that ive little or no hope of finding the marriage or my grandmothers birth because of this use of other names or not having been registered .
ill just have to hope that some of oscars large family might p.m me some family info .

seriously I think talking about Crimea "Nukes" Heron there will reap more rewards than on this board. There it is a name any serious researcher will recognise. Im sure there must be people there who know far more than I about this family.

At the very least people could point you in the direction of whats been written about the family in the Journals Of The Gypsy Lore Society.

As to whether they married according to gorjo laws, as opposed to their own laws. I find this is an approximate ratio after 20 yrs of research: Baptism very likely to find. Marriage about half the time, burials hardly ever.
