1851 & 1861 Census lookup please - Thomas & Eliza ADAMS, Swindon
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 10:12 BST (UK) »
Good morning,

I would be grateful if anyone would be kind enough to supply census details for the following household please:

Thomas ADAMS, b. Swindon 1822
Eliza ADAMS (wife), b. c1825 I think Swindon, but not sure.

Theoretically they were married c1848, logically in Swindon, but the only Bmd ref. I've found is in 2ndQ in Bath.............

By 1851 they should have had 2 or 3 children:

Albert b. c1849
William b. c1848
Edward b. 1850                  All born Swindon

By 1861 there should be in addition:

- Emily b. 1851
- Thomas b. 1852
- Walter b. 1855
- Harry b. 1857
- Frederick b. 1859              All born Swindon

Thomas died in 1869 so Eliza should figure in 1871 as a widow, probably with many of the children at hoome still, and in addition:

- Rose b. 1862
- George b. 1864
- Mark b. 1866
- Frank b. 1868                  All born Swindon

In 1881 we find the family living at 16 Western Street, Swindon. Eliza as a widow with 7 of her children still with her, from Albert, 32, down to Frank, 12.

Any help with this one would be very welcome.

Many thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick

I was about to add, that I don't think Edward  b 1850 belongs to this family....while there are possible deaths of Emily (1852) & Mark (1867), there is no death for an Edward up to 1871. He appears to be on the Census, in Swindon as the son of Alfred & Martha ADAMS. He may be a nephew, perhaps?

HO107 /  Piece: 1833 /  Folio: 511 /  Pg 4
1851 Stone Quarries -  Swindon, Cricklade, Wiltshire
Head; Alfred ADAMS 30, Stone Mason,
Wife: Martha 30, b Highworth
Son: Henry 4,
Son: Edward 1
ALL born Swindon except Martha

Good afternoon,

Many thanks for your latest observations.

I have, however, another piece of information just discovered.

I have found an 1881 Census result (Piece 1086/Folio 108/Page 10) from Brighton, Sussex which shows:

Edward ADAMS, aged 31, b. Swindon  Occ. Striker Iron Factory
Walter ADAMS (brother), aged 26 b. Swindon   Occ. Ditto

Walter is absent from the 1881 Census in Swindon, so unless there is a coincidence of 2 lots of Edward and Walter.as brothers................?

Having said that, I have had difficulty in establishing the order of the first 3 children in the family, namely Albert, Edward and William (providing of course that Edward IS part of this family).

Which begs the question of where Edward would have been in 1861 and 1871.

I am in two minds I must confess !

Nick

Hi

Hmm, very interesting that!

The 1881 Edward (with his 'brother' Walter)  says 31 - so born abt 1850.
The only Edward ADAMS on Freebmd - Highworth 1845-1852 is the one: Dec Qtr 1850

If I search for Edw* ADAM* b Swindon +/- 2 yrs I get:

1851: Aforementioned, son of Alfred & Martha

1861: Edward 12, at home with mother Martha & sibs
RG9 /  Piece: 1271 /  Folio: 63 /  Pg 29

1871: Edward 21, labourer in Quarries - at home with mother Martha & sibs.
RG10 /  Piece: 1881 /  Folio: 125 /  Pg 11

1871: Edward 20, driver eng, lodging in Swindon with family named DOBSON
RG10 /  Piece: 1881 /  Folio: 132 / Page: 25 /

Imagining  the 1871 labourer in Quarries,  Martha's son,  is likely to be the birth rego in 1850 - I can't find any other Edward ADAMS b 1850-ish Swindon to match Edward the driver in the 1871.  (I checked Births for *ED ADAM* too, incase he was using a middle name, but nothing came up).  Could Martha's son have been enumerated twice - possibly not actually at home with Mum on Census night but she stated that he was.

I am wondering if  the 1881 Edward & Walter are indeed cousins and they were close, and worked together - AND either the head of the house in  Sussex assumed they were brothers, or was told they were (for whatever reason)

And then I wonder - the 2nd Edward the Driver if he is  NOT  Martha's son,  then where is his birth record and where is he in 1861, 1881 etc.

The FreeBMD coverage charts looks as if the period 1848 to 1851 has complete BIRTH records - but a tiny % incomplete for the 1st Qtr and 4th Qtr  1852

Cheers

Good evening Shell,

Thanks for your message. There is a direct link but it goes way back to the mid 18th century for the common ancestor.

Briefly, Frederick ADAMS was one of about 12 children. His grandmother, Harriet HEAVENS, who married Thomas ADAMS in 1814, was the eldest child of Thomas & Mary HEAVENS from Longcot in Berkshire.

Thomas HEAVENS's younger brother was my 3 x great grandfather in direct line, so Harrriet's grandfather, John HAVENS or HEAVENS, born in 1732, is the common ancestor.

I have chapter and verse on all of these generations going back, but nothing specifically on Frederick ADAMS himself as he's a somewhat distant twig on my tree.

If I can be of any help, let me know.

Regards,

Nick
