TAYLOR 1841 census onwards look-up please
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 13:56 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I would love to know more about this family. Janet Taylor born 1823 in Dunfermline. At the time of her birth her father is described as a merchant in Leslie. Her father is John Taylor (but I think he may well have died by 1841) and her mother is Mary Taylor nee Balmain. In 1871 Janet is visiting her brother in London and is unmarried. I am hoping that she can be found in the 1841/51/61 censuses, presumably in Scotland.

I know that with the very common names that this is a long shot but I alse have great faith in rootschatters  :)

Hi Brie

Going by most of the children's christening details from IGI, likely Janet and a number of siblings were actually born in Leslie, Fife. There are a couple of possibles for Janet in 1851/61 with this birth place:

1851:

Elizabeth Archer 44, seaman's wife, b. Kinglessie, Fife
Janet Taylor 27, visitor, servant, b. Leslie
William Anderson 21, lodger
David Low 14 , lodger

Address: Blackscroft, Dundee Angus

1861:

Janet Taylor, 38, domestic servant b Leslie at the Calman household
Address: 40 Blackscroft, Dundee

Can't easily see her in 1871 which may fit if she was down in London.

Monica,

Thank-you very much. The parish of her birth/baptism record is given as Leslie (Fife) then on the actual record it says she was baptised at Dunfermline. I'm not sure how these work out geographically, I'll have to get out my map and gazetteer  :)

So these two entries look very likely. Is she not evident in 1841? I was hoping she would be with her family as her mum was my 4g grandma.

Thanks again
Brie

Hi Brie

As you know the 1841 census is harder to be certain of because of more limited info on the entries. I couldn't see anything obvious for her in Fife nor with mother Mary, likely though that by that point she may already have been working away from home perhaps.

Thanks Monica,

Every little snippet of information gratefully received. Yes, she could well have left home by then as she would have been about 18.

I suppose my next step is to try and trace mum with one of Janet's younger siblings. These walls take a lot of chipping and this one isn't even solid brick!

Thanks again
Brie

Brie

Have you tried looking for Mary Balmain/Taylor's death cert on Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

There is a death entry showing in Dundee for a Mary Taylor other surname Balmain, b. 1794 who died in 1867, Might be worth checking out if you are trying to find out information about Mary, the mother.

Just gone hunting for siblings in 1851 and found potentially another entry for Janet in 1851 which might be a better fit with a potential brother John (who shows as born in Leslie in 1825):

John Taylor 26, Master Baker , b. Leslie
Magdalene Taylor 26, b. Dundee
Janet Taylor 28, sister, b. Leslie
William Foreman 15, lodger
James Stewart 17, lodger
James McIntosh 22 , lodger

Address: 188 Seagate Ferguson's Land, Dundee

Thank-you Monica,

I have now read Mary's death certificate. She died a pauper in a poor house. What were her children thinking of? As far as I'm aware the one in London was doing okay. Maybe she didn't want to leave Scotland. All these unanswered questions.

Hi Brie

Dundee has a fantastic historical collection of Poor Relief Records. These records can contain a wealth of additional personal information that you cannot find else where. I've just had a look and there is an entry for a Mary Balmain Taylor, aged 68,  being admitted on 31 May 1861 - Ref. No. 1944. You can contact the Dundee City Archives through their site www.fdca.org.uk/FDCAPoorIndexes.html and perhaps request a copy of her records (I don't know how much they may charge for this service).
