Looking 4 family of James Henry Harrison of Thornton Bradford
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 14:16 BST (UK) »
I have a gap in my family tree on my dad's dad side and am keen to know more about the Harrison's as I never knew my granddad. I'm struggling to find parents/gr grandparents of James 'Jim' Henry Harrison born in 1877 but not sure where. I know he lived in Thornton Bradford and married a Jane Dennison from Kirkby Lonsdale in Kirkby Lonsdale in 1903 but the marriage certificate had no father named and no witnesses from the Harrison side. Not sure if his means his father wasn't alive (but surely it would have said 'deceased'?) or didn't agree to the wedding or whether James Henry was illegitimate?? I had no luck identifying him on the census or at Bfd library records apart from finding my grandad's (Alfred Harrison) baptism at Thornton Bethesda Wesleyan Methodist chapel in April 1919. My dad said that he thought James Henry died quite young so I searched the cemetery listings captured in 1937 but he wasn't listed. Any leads would be much appreciated.

Hi Chilli Pepper,

A very warm welcome to Rootschat.

I think the best starting point would be to find him in the 1911 census index.  www.1911census.co.uk.  I think he and Jane may be living in the district of North Brierley.    :)

One possible birth registration would be the one registered in Hunslet:

James Henry Harrison, Hunslet, Sept Qtr. 1876 volume 9b page 320.

You could try putting Hunslet for his place of birth in the 1911 census  ;)

What was James Henry`s occupation on his marriage certificate?

Regards,
Mo

Thanks Mo. Heard you were all such nice helpful people!
I've looked at the 1911 census neither James or Jane came up. I also searched James' address on the marriage certificate and the address on his son's (Alfred)baptism record but no-one at either address.
I'll take your advice and try the James Henry born in Hunslet in 1876.
On the marriage certificate it said he was a dyer. I did find one James Henry on the 1901 census in Leeds born 1877 who was a dyer and was living with his mother Sarah E Harrison(born 1840 Barnsley) in Allerton in Bradford and then again on the 1891 census living with his father Thomas (born in Leeds in 1833) a soap Boiler (sounds nice....not!),mother Sarah E and sister Louisa (born 1870), James was down as a Screw cutter  at the age of 14yrs. It could be feasible, but I can't be sure it's him????

Hi Chilli Pepper

Out of interest what was the 1903 address that was stated on the marriage cert?

And even though there were no harrison names as witness what were the witness names?

Hi there, the address for James Henry Harrison on the marriage certificate was 214 Thornton Road, the witnesses were John and Elizabeth Dennison his wife's (Jane) brother and sister.  I checked this address on 1911census and the address on his son Alfred' baptism 21 Alderscholes Lane Thornton but no joy.
