Newark Mercury Newspaper
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 15:38 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Im still looking into the Trickett family from Newark & am trying to find out if there are any online copies of the Newark Mercury for 1845. I am in Wales & quite a long way from Nottingham to look in the RO or Library so was hoping that there may be some online records of the paper. I am still stuck with finding out if our William Trickett is the one that died in 1843 or the one sent to Australia as a convict in 1845.

Thanks
Jan

Hi Jan,
I don't know if this will help you - hope so.
I recently had to ring Newark Library (local studies) regarding a newspaper article concerning an obituary. They are, I believe, happy to look for an entry within a week's date range.
The same applies for newspapers the Nottingham Local Studies Library.
So, if you can try and narrow the dates down you may be lucky.
Good luck.
Paulene :)

Thanks Paulene,

I know when he was convicted in Newark so I wonder how long after It would have been in the newspaper, thats the hard part!!!

Will try ringing them next week, when I have time or maybe I will email them & ask.

Thanks again
Jan

Hi Jan,
I'm not sure either, but I know articles re coroners reports were reported within a day or two of the court case - I would think reports for criminal convictions would be similar, Jan.
I thpught this link might come in useful to you, in case you need to know what newspapers were in circulation at the time, and where copies are located:

Hope it helps.
Paulene :)
Jan,
I'd be interested to know if you do find anything; and how long after it was reported. Always good to know these things.
Thank you.

If it's of any help at all, there was a William Trickett buried at Newark St Marys, aged 54 on 4th April 1843, there's no more information on the Notts FHS record other than that though.

Bower - Nottinghamshire (mainly Newark)
Crowder - Mansfield Nottinghamshire & Devon
Price - Newark,  Nottinghamshire
Ingleton - Skillington, Lincolnshire
Smith - All parts of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire & Lincolnshire especially Wisdom Smith, Robert & Evening Smith

Hi Paulene,

Just to let you know that a lady off the bbc website had a look for me at the newspapers in Nottingham & found this -

a report in the Nottingham Guardian of 18/4/1845

Newark Quarter Sessions
William Trickett was put to the bar on a bill of ladietment ( I think) charging him with having stolen six domestic fowls at Balderton the property of William Rawding. The facts were clearly proved and a verdict returned by the jury of guilty.
A certificate was handed in of a former conviction and the prisoner was sentenced by the court to be transported for 14 years."

That was all the info that was in the Newspaper.  I wonder if the earlier offence was also reported in the paper ?

He was tried 11 April 1845, so a week later the report was in the paper.
