Greenock Cemetery
« on: Friday 03 April 09 11:53 BST (UK) »
Could someone do a lookup at the Greenock Cemetery, please.

I have sent an email, but I did not get a reply.

Lair # 431 section BB

The Lair proprietor  was Samuel Craig, any further details regarding him?

I am aware of one buriel Samuel Craig aged 12 buried 21 July 1898.

Can you tell me if there were any other buriels?

Can you tell me if there is a headstone?

Any information you could supply would be very much appreciated.

Kathy

Thankyou Elaine,

I am trying to establish if the owner of the Lair is one of mine.

I presently have 8 Samuel Craig's all of them have the middle name Gibson.

Hi I wonder if I could trouble you to look up another lair whilst you are there - I have been struggling to trace Andrew Gowans whose wife is buried in Lair owned by him. I received this from the Inverclyde council
I have checked the sources here but haven't been able to find anything about Andrew.  As you know from searching our BDM list, Prudence Gowas died at 8 Ardgowan Street, Greenock in 1869.  I looked for her in the 1861 census but she is not listed.  She is listed in the Greenock DIrectory from 1864 until 1868-69 at 8 Ardgowan Street.

I checked the Greenock Cemetery Book and found details of her burial.  She was interred 1st April, 1869 at Lair no: 75, section F and the lair proprietor is given as Andrew Gowans.

I am hoping the Lair information might indicate when and where Andrew died - he was a ships captain - I have no other information about him.
Thanks
Gillian

Hi Elaine,

I don't want you to be out of pocket on my behalf, unless I can return the favour by doing a lookup for you on SP.

I cant say for sure that the 12 year old Samuel Craig is one of mine, I found the entry on the Watt Library BMD site, the lad drowned, I looked up the death entry on SP, young Samuel was the illegitimate son of Margaret Scriminger,  Belville Street Greenock, Bellville Street is where I have found a lot of my relations.

The Greenock Telegraph item on his death lists his father as Samuel, The Watt Library supplied the information that the Lair proprietor was Samuel Craig.

In  1898 when the lad drowned, his mother had married James McCallum, the stepfather is the informant on Samuel's death entry.  No sign of Samuel senior.

I was thinking it would be unusual to only have one buriel in the Lair, and am hoping other buriels will give me the information of in particular Samuel Sr.

As I have previous said, all of the Samuel's I have previouse located have the middle name
Gibson, I have all of their birth year, and at least half of the deaths.

1824 - 1872
1848 - 1903
1871 - 1909
1891 - ?
1894 - ?
1897 - 1962
1902 - 1971
+ 1 presumed living, (birthdate known)
