You should be able to find them on ScotlandsPeople at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Pre 1855 (when statutory reg. began in Scotland), it will depend on what Church your families followed.

Hi,if you check out the freecen website you will find this family in 1851. Could this be your Thomas? Head of the household is Thomas Mckillop, married, age 37 & a gardener, born in Bute. Then there's his offspring;Janet 14,Alexander,10 both born in Kilmarnock, then James 7, & Thomas 6,both born in Bute.No trace of their mother in this house.

Oops! I forgot to say where they were in 1851.In Knockaw,Kilbride - Bute. I've just looked back to the 1841 census & found Thomas (senior)living  in Brodick,Kilbride, with (I assume) his siblings & mother. Mary,70,Mary 35,James 30,& himself 25,all born in bute.

Hi flst,
what was your ancestor,s profession.
Brodick being the 'capital' of the Isle of Arran
and Bute being the Isle of Cumbrae being on the west coast of Scotland you could try
The Glasgow and West of Scotland family history society at
www.gwsfhs.org.uk

it may also be worth while moving the post from Scotland general to Buteshire for the  Bute connection.
I think the Isle of Arran is covered by Ayrshire though I maybe wrong.
Have you been to both islands truly
 God,s country!
kind regards,Billy.
