My grandmothers link with Great Worge Farm Brightling
« on: Saturday 04 April 09 12:56 BST (UK) »
For some time I have been intrigued??
My grandmother Emma Julia Clark was Born 1872 in Pulborough. In 1881 she is with her family at the Mil POnd Brightling where her father Charles is a Miller.By 1891 she was on TH I.O.W with family. The family seem to have left the area by 1891 when she is still quite young. They did not return. She married in Thornton Heath near Wimbledon and lived in Fulham.
Now here is the puzzle. In 1939-nearly 50 years after leaving the area I am evacuatedwith my Mum and grandparents to Great Worge Farm. My Grandma knew the farmer but I dont know who  it was. Can anyone find out the name of the farms occupants at that time.On my fathers war record Great Worge is given as contact address.Unfotunately grandma died down there in1941 and is buried i the church at Brightling --so she had come back home.I find it hard to think of her staying in cintact with someone from there for so long.
Thanks
Ringrose

I had a look in the London Gazette online.  There are about six references to a Willis Claypole of GreatWorge Farm, Brightling, in the years between 1929 and 1930.

I'm not brilliant at interpreting legal jargon but it looks like he was in receivership and may have sold the property.  Hope it might provide some leads to follow.

There is also a message on Rootsweb via the link below where a lady seems to mention the people living at that farm when she was evacuated there.

Hope this helps!

Thank you both for the interest  and time you have given to my search. THe gazette article is interesting but like you do not understand the jargon. The other link was a link I made way back in 2003 and unfortunately there was no link.

Have an idea....  this company publish monthly on the internet a page for each of the local parishes, titled the Village Voice.    Perhaps you could ask if they could publish your query in their Mountfield and Robertsbridge editions.
