John JONES - Transported to Van Diemans Land 1841
« on: Saturday 04 April 09 22:35 BST (UK) »
I am looking for JOHN JONES convicted at BODMIN GAOL CORNWALL ENGLAND and sentenced to 7 years and transported to Van Diemans Land 13 November 1841 on the ship SOMERSETSHIRE.

Also JOHN JONES convicted at BODMIN GAOL 21 January 1844 transported to VDL 15 May 1844 on the ship LONDON

I would like to know of what they were convicted and did their families go with them,
if so, what were their wives and childrens names and did they ever return to England?

I am trying to eliminate or confirm the JOHN JONES from a friends family tree.

Are you able to help please? I would be very grateful if you can. Thank you,
Latchford. Birmingham England.

From the West briton Advertiser Jan 3 1844

Quote
JOHN JONES, 41, indicted for maliciously killing three horses, the property of JAMES HAMEL; Mr. Hockin for the prosecution, Mr. Stokes for defense. Found GUILTY. Due to the late hour in which the paper received the report, the particulars are postponed until next week.

This is followed by a detailed description of the case

Are either of these men of interest? If so we will be able to assist further.

Cheers Kris  :)

If you locate your men through this index search, you can read their full records online and gather a lot of information about their history and times in VDL.
