Uniform Identification
« on: Monday 06 April 09 12:20 BST (UK) »
Would anyone be able to tell me about this soldier? What war? Can I assume this is British? Company and Rank?

Thanks so much
Wendy

He seems to be wearing the ribbons for the British War Medal and  Victory Medal from WW1. So there should be a medal index card for him, either on Ancestry (free and in colour), or on the NA website (£2 and B&W).

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp and press search

No idea on the uniform. He isn't wearing any form of rank or regiment devices.

Another thought...

Is this from a larger group pic??

It may well be very handy to see the lot if you have them!

I was going to suggest Police too, circa 1930-50, but no visible insignia (rank or force) and buttons look rather generic. Again, sight of the whole group (ikf such there be) would be helpful. Possibly Canadian Police (municipal/provincial, rather than RCMP)

On a different computer -- will rescan later.

I do not have a name, however, it might be John Gibb, born 1887, Surrey Wandsworth. The complete photo is of a man and woman -- the woman is not in uniform -- likely his sister or wife.
