Shipston-On-Stour Workhouse/Shipston House
« on: Monday 06 April 09 19:06 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
Apologies if someone has already answered this - I did a search on the site but nothing seemed to come up.

I would like to know when Shipston workhouse became Shipston House and what the difference was.  I have a relative who died at Shipston House in 1928 and am trying to understand his circumstances at the time.  He was quite ill when he died and the informant was an 'occupier' of said house.  The address is listed as 67 Shipston Road.  I can't understand whether he was, for instance, a pauper, or whether it was some sort of hospital by that time.

Does anyone have information about Shipston workhouse/Shipston House that they can enlighten me with?  When I read about it on a couple of web sites, they talked about the workhouse 'changing after 1930' but this doesn't really help me much, sadly.

Hoping you can help
Thanks so much

There's some info on the workhouses website, haven't read through though.
That's workhouses.org.uk if you haven't already been there.

Hi
Thanks for the lead - I have just read through but it does not tell me much of detail about the nature of Shipston House (as it is on the death certificate) and what exactly Shipston House was, merely that the workhouse became known as Shipston House 'later on'.   ???

I am trying to understand if he died in a workhouse and if not, what was it exactly.
Cheers

Hi Flosse,
My book 'Workhouses of the Midlands' says:
After 1930, the workhouse became a Public Assistance Institution run by Warwickshire County Council. It later became known as Shipston House and was used as a commercial premises.
However, I've just found this on the National Archives site:

Perhaps the archives office at Warwick can solve the mystery for you - hope so.

And, just found these photos - it does look as if there were still nurses working there in 1958, doesn't it?

Perhaps it was still used as some sort of nursing home :-\
Warwick Archives hopefully has the answer.

This may be of no relevance as I'm not familiar with the area, but the only Shipston Road I could find on the 1881 and 1891 census is in nearby Eatington, Stratford on Avon and in 1891 there is an Eatington House on that road, long shot but it's name could have been changed later.
Hope that doesn't hinder!

Yep it looks like it's what is now "Ettington Park", sorry if I'm confusing things, I can get carried away sometimes!

Oooh - don't tell me thing like that, Cad!  :)

problem is, it's all so interesting anyway...

Thanks Willow/Cad...will look through all your info and hopefully find out.  Williow: I think you may be right - a call to Warks archives may be in order to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks - will post their answer!
