Completed thanks! -Kennet Place, Speen - is it still there?
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 21:27 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

Can anyone tell me if Kennet Place & Northampton Terrace (both in London Road), Speen still exist?
My great grandparents, James & Ann Elizabeth Payne, lived there in 1881 & 1891.  He was shown as a watercress grower in 1891.  Are there still watercress beds there?  Or do you know where they were?
They and their first three children were born in Rickmansworth.  I have found what are possible James (1895) & Ann (1896) deaths in Watford area and wonder if they might have been 'removed' if they became ill? (They were only 47 years old.)  The youngest three children (born Newbury area) seem to have remained in Berkshire, although they would have been only 10/11, 8/9 and 4/5 years old when their parents died.
The elder three had all left home by this time. The eldest son I believe went to Oxford, the daughter married a local boy, and the 2nd son (my grandfather) had joined the army.
The youngest son eventually joined his brother in the army and the two girls married in 1915 & 1923.  But what happened in between?  Did the children go to their elder sister?  Any idea of how I might find out? Your local knowledge could be a great help.
Here's hoping.....

Kennet Place & Northampton Terrace are still there.

For a map of the area: http://tinyurl.com/cj3pjb - all of which is in Newbury these days.

Kennet Place is shown as two terraces of housing perpendicular to the London Rd - you can just about make out Kennet written between them.

Heading NW there is another terrace - I think this is Northampton Terrace - and then the Robin Hood pub/restaurant.

I don't think there are any cress beds left in the area - the land would be far too valuable as a building site. Odds are that they were alongside the Lambourn river to the north of these houses, or alongside the Kennet to the south (the two rivers join up a few hundred yards east of here).

Thank you very much for the info and the map  :)
I hadn't realized that Speen was so close to Donnington/Shaw!  That is where my grandmother's maternal relatives (Pococks/Salters) were based. Her grandfather was a carpenter & her grandmother a 'laundress'. My grandfather's mother was also down as laundress, probably more commonly called a washerwoman!  It's strange that these families were so close together and the females shared the same occupation.  Mostly they were in service. Or helping with the family business.
Do you know if there are any books of postcards from this time?  Or anything similar?  It would be nice to fill in the picture a little more.

Although I'm new to Rootchat I've been enjoying seeing how helpful and friendly everyone is.

There are a number of books of old photos of Newbury - few of which are still in print. Pick them up on ebay.

There are also a few sites with old photos - google for Frith or Taunt.
