« on: Friday 10 April 09 13:48 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Attached is 1884 marriage cert. of one set of my great grandparents.

Can anyone help with deciphering the occupation of the bride and also, of the groom's father?

Many thanks,

Tim

Hello, Tim,

The bride's occupation simply says  "in service"

The occupation for Oliver silver can be seen in the 1881 census
RG11/1249  folio 52  page 19
Odiham    Hampshire

Oliver Silver  head age 50   Ag Lab (Thatcher)   b Odiham
Jane  wife  age  age 48   b   ditto
seven children one of whom is James Silver, age 27   Railway Lab  b  Odiham

Thanks all for replies.

Oliver was, indeed, a thatcher - but how you read that for 'labourer' I don't know (I still can't and you've told me what to read!)

'In Service' sits very well for Ellen, although I've never seen a capital 'I' written like that before (but then, I've probably not been doing this as long as most of you).

Many thanks,

Tim

Agree that the bride's was in service but how do you get labourer for groom's father ???

It doesnt look like the third letter is a B more like an L :-\. Also the first letter looks like a J.Look at the J in James.
