Hi
I have reached a full stop with my relative listed above..He was born 1831 in Welby Lincolnshire..I have found all the census records from 1851 onwards...I think I have him on the 1841 but it only shows his mother as Elizabeth...I have no paternal link to work on..Is there an easy way of finding this out?

According to the IGI, he was baptised at Welby 29 May 1831, as John Eldred BROWN, son of John and Elisabeth.

John BROWN had married Elizabeth ELDRED at Ropsley 13 Oct 1818.

Thanks very much for this info..It seems likely the 1841 census info I have is correct although father is not named...Certainly shows mum as Elizabeth and daughter mary is 5-6yrs older than John whic matches.....also resident in welby in 1841...Maybe Father died before census

Note too. the presence of an aged Thomas EDLRIDGE (Elizabeth's father?) in the same house in 1841.  Also the presence of a Lewin AVERY and wife Elizabeth - she had been Elizabeth BROWN, marrying in 1841 shortly before the census.

As Elizabeth ELDRED was married in Ropsley, it's possible that her mother was the Elizabeth ELDRIDGE buried there 9 Oct 1836 aged 73

This leads us to the baptism at Ropsley of Elizabeth HELDRED in Feb 1792 at Ropsley, dau of Thomas and Elizabeth.

Also to Thomas HELDRED marrying Elizabeth BINGE at Ropsley in 1786.

Who said the hilliterate haitch was dead?

The only aged Thomas ELD* burial I can find in Lincs was at Tallington 23 Dec 1846 aged 82.  It's a tidy distance (20+ miles) from Welby but I can't see such a person in Tallington in 1841.
