William Jerome - Senior or Junior?
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 20:56 BST (UK) »
Please could someone confirm this signature for me. It's from an 1830 will and is my 5xG.Grandfather William Jerome. Could someone tell me whether it's Junior or Senior on the end. I know what it looks like and if I'm right it will change years of research.  :'(

Jerome - Hampshire (including IOW)
Parsons - Surrey, Somerset and Devon

Looks like Junior to me the first letter looks the same as J in Jerome.

Hi Marky

Being from the old school I would say that the previous replies were correct.  A capital  J goes below the line but I cant remember a capital S doing that.

Hope this helps you

Yep, thought it was a J as well. I've had this will for ages and never noticed the Junior bit before, or perhaps always thought it was Senior. The problem is I've been working on the assumption that William's father was a Joseph Jerom, this could change everything!

The next question is would there be any reason for William's son, another William, to have his name on the will? I don't think that the William Jerome signature is actually his writing, I believe that's in another part of the will, so the signature was probably written by whomever wrote the will!

In fact let me see If I can attach the bit I'm talking about, it will make a lot more sense!

Those three signatures are witnesses aren't they? Including William Jerome Junior?

Yes that was what I was thinking as the top signature of William Jerome although I am no handwriting expert looks as though it has been written by a much weaker hand. The rest as you say are witnesses to the will.
