Welshpool enquiry:boatbuilding
« on: Monday 13 April 09 10:56 BST (UK) »
I have an enquiry about a John Henry Ward who was born in Runcorn, Cheshire, but lived in 1881 in Salop Road, Welshpool with his family, and is described as a boat builder. The record states that his house was adjoining The Grapes Inn and the Bank House. I was in Welshpool last Tuesday and saw Sussex House between the two houses mentioned above. I think that was the house, but I am not certain. I noticed it had 1835 at the top. Another record states they were at 17 Salop Road. It may well have been named Sussex House later.
Can anyone throw any light on boat building around Welshpool at that time?
In 1891 John Henry Ward is found further south at the ancient community of Ceffnllys near Llandrindrod Wells, again as a boat builder. I have put this part of the enquiry into the Radnorshire forum but again if anyone knows of boat building there at that time any information would be most welcome and appreciated.

Alex, I would suggest getting in touch with the Welshpool museum, as it's situated on the canal basin.

They were very helpfull people when I visited there.
